Are research universities better for STEM students than other types of colleges?

Hi! As I start my college hunt, I'm wondering if research universities are better than other institutions. I'm a science-oriented student, and I'd like to know whether attending a research university, as opposed to a non-research institution, will significantly impact my academic and career growth. Thanks, everyone!

Hey there! It's great that you're considering your options as you start your college search. When it comes to comparing research universities and non-research institutions, there is no one-size-fits-all answer as it depends on your personal preferences and future goals.

As a science-oriented student, you might find more research opportunities at a research university, because they often have more funding and resources for scientific research projects. My own child, for example, has been able to work in a lab alongside professors since their sophomore year at a research university, which might not be the case at some smaller schools.

However, non-research institutions (such as liberal arts colleges) can still provide quality science education with opportunities for research, and can offer a more intimate learning environment with smaller class sizes and closer relationships with professors. In the end, it's about finding the right fit for you.

What's important is to carefully research each institution and visit campuses, if possible, to get a feel for the environment. Don't forget to look into opportunities for undergraduate research, internships, and courses that align with your goals. Whichever type of school you choose, just make sure it meets your specific needs and goals. Happy searching!
