Unique extracurricular activities for competitive college applications?

Hey everyone, I'm a junior and I realized that my extracurricular activities are pretty generic. I'm part of my high school's Mathletes, the swim team, and I volunteer at the local food bank. I'm planning on applying to some competitive universities, including NYU and Northwestern. Does anyone have suggestions for unique extracurricular activities that will help my application stand out? Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Hi there! First, keep in mind that admissions officers understand that there might be some overlap in the extracurriculars students participate in. It's important to showcase commitment and genuine interest in your extracurriculars rather than just including unique ones for the sake of it.

However, if you're passionate about pursuing something outside the box, consider looking into local community organizations, clubs, or workshops that cater to your specific interests. For instance, if you're into art, you could find a creative writing group or a pottery class to join. You might also consider mentoring or tutoring younger students, either in your area or through online platforms. Another strong option could be starting your own club or initiative at your school, which shows leadership and dedication.

Remember to focus on your strengths, passions, and interests, rather than just trying to be different for the sake of it. Best of luck with your college application journey!
