What happens if I apply early decision and end up not going?

So I'm thinking about applying early decision to my dream school, but I'm a little bit stressed about what would happen if I don't actually go there (due to financial reasons or other unforeseen circumstances). Are there any consequences if I apply early decision and then choose not to attend that college? Thanks for any insight!

First, let me say it's great that you're considering your options thoughtfully before diving into the early decision process. Early decision is a binding agreement, so it's important to be aware of the consequences before making that commitment. If you're accepted through early decision, you're expected to withdraw all your other applications and attend the college you've been admitted to.

That being said, there are a couple of valid reasons why you would be released from this commitment. Financial aid is one of them—if the aid package provided by the school is insufficient and you can demonstrate that it would be a significant financial burden, then it is possible to be released from the agreement. You should always be honest and transparent about your financial situation with the school.

It should be noted though, that reneging on an early decision contract without valid reason can have repercussions, such as other colleges becoming aware of your decision to break the commitment. It is always advised to be mindful of the binding nature of early decision and to seek counsel from your high school counselor or others in the process.
