Which Majors Are Good for Entering the Nursing Field?

Hello! Can anyone help me to find out which majors are best suited for future nurses? I'm a high school junior, and I'd like to get an idea of what kind of majors I should consider in college if I want to become a nurse. Thanks!

Hello! If you are looking to enter the nursing field, the most direct route is through a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. This program is specifically designed to prepare you for a career as a registered nurse (RN) and typically takes about four years to complete. Graduating with a BSN degree qualifies you to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN), which is required for obtaining your RN license.

There are also other pathways into nursing if you don't initially choose a BSN program. For instance, if you complete a bachelor's degree in a different major, you can still pursue an accelerated BSN program. These programs, typically offered over 12 to 18 months, are specifically designed for those who already hold a non-nursing bachelor's degree and allow you to obtain your BSN in a shorter amount of time.

In addition, some students choose to pursue an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) first. Once you've completed an ADN program and obtained your RN license, you can work as a nurse while continuing your education with an RN-to-BSN program to obtain your bachelor's degree.

Another option is to consider a Bachelor of Science in a related healthcare field, such as public health, health sciences, or health administration, although these majors may not lead to a nursing career directly. Instead, they prepare you for various health care roles, which could complement your pursuit of a nursing career later on.

To summarize, the most straightforward major for entering the nursing field is a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. However, accelerated BSN programs, ADN programs, and RN-to-BSN programs offer alternative pathways into nursing if you decide to follow another academic path initially. Good luck with your college search and future nursing career!
