Suggestions on Neuroscience Major at Barnard?

I've always been super into neuroscience and I'm particularly interested in Barnard's program. Any current or former students out there who can shed some light on the experience there? Would really appreciate to hear about class structures, research opportunities, or just general experiences within the major.

Sure, I can provide some insight into Barnard's neuroscience program even if I haven't been a student there myself.

The Barnard Neuroscience and Behavior (NSB) department provides a strong foundation in Biologic and Psychologic principles, and offers different pathways within the Neuroscience major. It's actually quite special, considering that it's run jointly by the Psychology and Biology departments. This interdisciplinary approach ensures a solid foundation in both fields and gives you a dynamic perspective on neuroscience.

Many students appreciate the smaller class sizes which often lead to direct interaction with professors. The faculty members include specialists in different areas of neuroscience, so you get a diverse picture of the field.

There are ample opportunities for research under the guidance of faculty. Many students pursue internships or research projects both on and off-campus. Columbia University's Neuroscience department is also a stone's throw away: this proximity considerably broadens the range of research opportunities available to you.

The major concludes with a senior research project which is a culmination of your learning and an opportunity to engage with primary research which can be quite challenging but highly rewarding.

But take note that neuroscience is an intensive major requiring a substantial commitment of time, both in and out of class. You'll have a pretty heavy science course load including chemistry and physics prerequisites, so be prepared for a challenge.

Even though academics will keep you on your toes, don't forget to take advantage of living in New York City. Neuroscience-related events and seminars are a regular feature that you can look forward to.

I hope that helps! Do consider reaching out to the department directly, or the Barnard admissions office, for more personalized advice. They can put you in touch with current students or alumni who can share their personal experiences.
