How tough is the AP Comp Exam?

Got AP Comp on my schedule for the upcoming year and I'm feeling kinda nervous about the exam. How difficult is the AP Comp exam compared to other AP tests? Any insights on what to focus on while studying?

The AP English Language and Composition exam, colloquially referred to as AP Comp, does have its own challenges, but the difficulty level can often depend on your individual strengths, means of preparation, and familiarity with the material.

It's a fairly reading and writing-intensive test, which can feel more demanding if you're more oriented towards STEM subjects. However, students who enjoy reading, writing, and analyzing text often find it less daunting compared to something like AP Calculus or AP Physics.

The AP Comp exam is divided into two main sections.

- The first section is multiple-choice and tests your reading comprehension and rhetorical analysis skills. It contains passages of nonfiction texts, which you'll need to analyze and answer questions on within a set period of time.

- The second section includes free-response questions where you'll have to generate clear, well-structured essays that demonstrate your understanding of rhetoric and your ability to analytically respond to prompts.

A few strategies for studying include practicing rhetorical analysis, studying different types of arguments and structure, and developing a quick yet effective system for essay writing. You can practice by analyzing various texts (speeches, essays, articles, etc.), pinpointing the author's argument, identifying the rhetorical strategies used, and discussing the effectiveness of those strategies. Reading a variety of books, articles, speeches, etc. can prepare you for the vast types of passage you’ll be given to analyze on the test.

Furthermore, timed practice can be extremely beneficial to get accustomed to the pace of the exam. Take as many practice tests as you can, under conditions as close to the actual exam as possible to get in the habit of managing your time effectively.

Don't forget to review feedback on your essays and understand where you can improve. Keep in mind, this exam isn't just about regurgitating facts but analyzing and interpreting a passage's content to craft a well-reasoned argument. Most of all, don't stress too much! Preparation is key, and with consistent study, you'll be well-prepared to tackle the AP Comp exam.
