Getting into New York University

Guys, NYU is my absolute dream school! Do any of you guys who successfully got in have any advice on the application process? Is it really as tough to get in as they say?

Yes, admission to NYU can certainly be competitive, but don't let that discourage you! There are several aspects you can focus on to strengthen your application:

1. Academics: Ensure you're challenging yourself with rigorous coursework (honors, AP, IB classes, etc) and maintaining a strong GPA. While test scores are optional for NYU for the 2024-2025 application cycle, if you choose to submit, they should ideally be competitive.

2. Extracurriculars: NYU values students who exhibit passion and leadership in their activities. Don’t fill your application with a laundry list of activities; instead, focus on deep involvement in a few areas that truly interest you.

3. Essays: Use your personal statement to tell a story that the admission officers wouldn’t glean from looking at the rest of your application. Make sure to spend particular time on the "Why NYU?" supplement question. Really research specific classes, professors, clubs, and cultural experiences at NYU that excite you. Try to visit if you can or attend virtual events if travel is not possible.

4. Recommendation Letters: Ask teachers who know you well and can speak to your potential academically, as well as your character, leadership, and service.

5. If applicable, a resume or list detailing your artistic and/or technical experience if applying to a creative major.

The average acceptance rate for NYU was around 10% for the 2023-2024 application cycle, which indeed marks it as a competitive school. Still, remember that statistics don't tell the whole story, and each application is reviewed holistically. So put your best effort into crafting each part of your application to showcase who you are as an individual and a student. Good luck!
