What exactly does 'DBQ' mean?

Lately, I keep hearing 'DBQ' thrown around in my AP History class. Could anyone clear up what this term means exactly?

DBQ stands for "Document-Based Question." It's a type of question used in Advanced Placement (AP) history exams, such as AP US History, AP European History, or AP World History. Unlike regular essay questions, a DBQ presents you with a series of documents related to a specific historical period or event. These sources can include written works, maps, images, and other historical artifacts.

Your task in a DBQ is to analyze these documents and integrate them into a coherent, evidence-based response that answers the given prompt. DBQ would typically require you also to demonstrate a solid understanding of the broader historical context beyond what is directly mentioned in the documents.

For instance, you might be presented with letters from soldiers during the American Civil War and asked to answer a question regarding their views on the war. You would need to pull evidence from these letters (the documents) but also discuss the broader social and political climate during the Civil War in your answer.

Hope this clears things up for you!
