Identifying Independent Variables: X or Y?

Hi everyone, I'm doing some science homework and I'm a bit confused about something. When I'm charting data, is the independent variable usually assigned to the x-axis or the y-axis? I'll appreciate any help.

Hello! The convention when charting data is typically to assign the independent variable to the x-axis. This is because the independent variable is what you alter or control in your experimentation, and the dependent variable, which goes on the y-axis, is what you measure in response to those changes. So, for example, if you're studying how the number of hours of sunlight (independent variable) affects plant growth (dependent variable), the hours of sunlight would go on the x-axis and the plant growth data would go on the y-axis. That's a simple way to keep track of it!
