Caltech Application Experience

Hi folks, I'm planning to apply to Caltech, any tips on what their application looks like? How can I showcase my interest in tech and science effectively on my application?

Hello! First off, it's wonderful that you're considering Caltech, known for its rigorous science and engineering programs.

First, in your application, you will have to fill out the general Common Application or Coalition Application and the supplement specifically for Caltech. You'll need to demonstrate both your academic abilities and your passion for science and technology. Showcase your grades, course rigor, and any AP scores, especially in STEM classes.

Given that for the 2024-2025 application cycle, Caltech has reinstated its standardized testing requirement, also make sure you take your SAT or ACT on time. Caltech has been test-blind for the last few admissions cycles, which means they weren't considering standardized test scores at all, so there isn't current data about what they look for. However, given how selective the institution is, you can safely assume you'll need to aim high - above a 1500 on the SAT, or at least a 34 on the ACT.

Second, you should highlight your involvement in extracurriculars related to science and technology. These could include participation in science fairs, coding competitions, internships or research projects, or leadership roles in a robotics, coding, or science club at your school. Try to weave in examples that demonstrate your initiative or significant achievements.

Finally, in your Caltech supplement, you'll be asked several questions designed to gauge your scientific curiosity and dedication to the pursuit of knowledge. Make sure to discuss specific aspects of Caltech's programs, research opportunities, or faculty that draw you to the school. You want to demonstrate that your interest in the school is genuine, and that you've taken the time to research the institution in-depth. A last word of advice: Caltech is known for its focus on collaboration and community, so going beyond your individual passion for STEM, to emphasize areas where you've worked with others or fostered community, could be beneficial.

Good luck with your application! You're headed down an exciting path!
