Hey everyone, I'm currently a freshman and I'm curious if it's a good idea to take the SAT this early. I've heard some people say it's better to take it earlier so you have time for improvement, but I'm a little worried I won't be prepared yet. Thoughts?
Hello there! It's commendable that you're planning ahead, but taking the SAT as a freshman may not be necessary. It's true that starting early gives you time to retake the exam if needed. However, you likely haven't covered all of the material that will be tested, especially in math.
Most students find that they are better prepared after completing more of their high school coursework, particularly Algebra II, which is typically taken in the sophomore or junior year. Additionally, your reading, writing, and analytical skills will continue to develop as you progress through high school, which will be beneficial on the evidence-based reading and writing sections.
If you're keen on beginning to prepare, you might consider taking the PSAT as a sophomore. This can be a great way to assess where you stand and to practice for the SAT without the pressure of it being your official score. Keep focusing on your courses and perhaps start with some light SAT prep if you're eager, but you might find that waiting until sophomore or junior year to take the full SAT could be more strategic. Best of luck!
