What are the entry requirements for MIT?

Hi folks, MIT is definitely on my radar. But with their reputation, I know the bar is set REALLY high. Can anyone provide info about what they're looking for in terms of entry requirements? Like, do they require a specific GPA, SAT score, extracurriculars, etc.?

MIT is indeed a highly selective institution and they do have specific requirements for their applicants. To start with, your academic performance is of paramount importance. While they don’t have a minimum GPA requirement per se, successful applicants typically have very high GPAs and a competitive class rank.

In terms of standardized tests, as of the 2024-2025 application cycle, MIT is no longer test-optional and does require the SAT or ACT. However, they do not state a specific minimum score. To give you a ballpark, most admitted students tend to have SAT scores typically above 1500, and ACT scores above 34. But remember, these are just averages and there are always exceptions.

On the subject of extracurriculars, quality is always more important than quantity. Having a few activities where you demonstrate a high level of involvement and leadership, or where you show purpose-driven commitment (especially if they align with your intended major) will factor in positively. In other words, MIT is looking for 'spiky' students who have a clear passion and deep engagement in a few areas, rather than many shallow engagements in a wide array of activities.

Additionally, MIT also requires two letters of recommendation, one preferably from a math or science teacher and another from a humanities, social science, or language teacher. Personal essays and an Activities section are also required parts of the application where you showcase who you are beyond your academics.

Lastly, don't forget that MIT also requires you to complete an interview. This offers another opportunity to stand out by showing genuine interest and personality, while also getting your questions answered.

Keep in mind admissions at MIT are holistic, meaning everything you submit in your application will be considered to understand who you are as a student and a person. Good luck!
