What kind of GPA is needed for UT Austin?

Hi everyone, I'm stressing a bit about my GPA and wondering how it stacks up. does anyone know what the GPA requirements for UT Austin are? I'm hoping to clarify if they look at weighted or unweighted GPAs. Thanks!

Hey there! The University of Texas at Austin is a selective school, and the academic profile of accepted students is generally quite competitive. While there's no official "required" GPA for admission, most admitted students typically have grades that put them in the top 10% of their high school class.

However, keep in mind that UT Austin has a holistic review process. This means they aren't just looking at your GPA, but also at the rigor of your high school curriculum, your extracurricular involvement, your essays, and more. Excelling in areas outside of your GPA can certainly help your application.

One thing that UT Austin makes clear is that they recalculate your GPA based on the academic courses you've taken. This means they don't include electives or physical education, for instance. They look at both your unweighted and weighted grades, with the weighted GPA giving some extra credit for honors, AP, and IB classes, showing them that you've challenged yourself with a rigorous curriculum. So, it can help to take difficult classes and do well in them.

Always remember, having a lower GPA doesn't automatically disqualify you. Showcasing your individual strengths and unique experiences in your application can still make you a strong candidate. Also, be aware that, starting with the 2024-2025 application cycle, UT Austin requires all applicants to submit an SAT or ACT score.

Good luck!
