BYU Admission- What are they looking for?

Hello everyone! I'm planning on applying to BYU Utah next year and I wondered if anyone could share their experiences with the application process? Like, what key factors do they consider while evaluating their applicants? What will make my application a really standout? Thanks in advance!

Brigham Young University (BYU) in Utah evaluates applicants holistically, taking into account a variety of factors. These include:

1. Academics: BYU considers high school grades, rigor of curriculum (for example, participation in AP courses), and standardized test scores. As of the 2024-2025 application cycle, BYU does require the submission of an SAT or ACT score.

2. Extracurricular Involvement: Like most universities, BYU values students who have been actively involved outside of their academic lives. This can include participation and leadership in clubs, community service, sports, jobs, and internships. To maximize the impact of your extracurriculars, try to showcase depth of involvement in a few rather than modest participation in many.

3. Essays: BYU's application includes several unique essay prompts. These essays offer the chance to showcase yourself as a well-rounded individual, and demonstrates your ability to contribute positively to the school community.

One thing to add: remember that BYU is a private, faith-based institution strongly affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. If you're a member of the Church, that will play a role in your application, as will any seminary participation or plans to serve a mission. If you're not a member, don't worry – BYU welcomes students of all faiths. However, every student is required to adhere to the BYU Honor Code, which includes rules related to honesty, clean language, dress and grooming standards, and abstinence from alcohol, coffee, tea, tobacco, and drug use.

A standout application, then, might include not only strong academics and extracurricular activities, but also a genuine respect for and willingness to uphold the Honor Code, as well as a real commitment to service and community, both of which are significant values in the BYU community. Best of luck with your application!
