Is National Honor Society membership advantageous for college apps?

Alright, so I just got invited to join NHS at my school. I'm wondering if it's really worth it to add to my already full plate. Does being a part of National Honor Society make a difference to colleges when they see it on my application?

Membership in the National Honor Society (NHS) can serve as a positive indicator of your character and commitment to the community and academic excellence. However, it is not a unique determinant of your acceptance into college. Admissions officers give credit to sustained involvement and leadership within extracurriculars more than membership alone. For example, if you leverage your NHS involvement to lead significant service projects or initiate community improvement efforts, that will stand out more than simply attending meetings. Colleges are looking for depth and impact, which can be realized through taking on more substantial roles within the NHS. Always remember, quality over quantity: it's better to be deeply involved in a few activities than spread thin across many. If NHS will detract from your current commitments, where you may have the chance to make a larger impact, weigh the benefits carefully before deciding to join.
