Extra Curriculum: Is it worth it?

Been contemplating doing some extra curriculum courses, maybe online or at a local community college. Does it actually make a difference when applying to colleges? Anyone got experience or views on this?

It absolutely can make a difference when applying to colleges. The reason behind this is because extracurriculars are crucial to show AOs (Admissions Officers) that you are well-rounded, engaged in your community, and passionate about certain activities or subjects. They provide the texture to your academic achievements and can demonstrate your potential as an active member of their campus.

That being said, it's important that your extracurriculars are meaningful and reflect your genuine interests. Just adding activities to your resume for the sake of having a long list may not have the desired effect. Admission officers are usually more intrigued by sustained commitment to a few activities than superficial participation in many.

If your prospective extra curriculum courses are related to your future major or career option, they can showcase your initiative and passion in this field. Online courses can be beneficial as well, especially if those courses relate to your planned course of study or can substantiate the depth of your intellectual curiosity.

On the other hand, local community college classes can also have their merit. They can show that you can handle college-level classes, which can give you an edge. Plus, you may get the opportunity to explore subjects that might not be available at your high school.

In short, an extracurricular activity, if pursued passionately and sincerely, can add value to your application. Just remember, it's quality over quantity. So, choose something you are passionate about and dedicate yourself to it. It can be a difference-maker in your college application journey.
