How to Get into Famous Art Schools?

I'm an aspiring artist in my junior year, and I'm starting to think about colleges. I'd love to hear any advice or experiences about applying to famous art schools like RISD or CalArts. I'm wondering about things like portfolio requirements, or if I need to have a specific focus in my work. Thanks for any help!

Art school admissions are certainly unique, as they place significant emphasis on your portfolio. Here are some tips that might help guide your application process:

1. Portfolio: This will be the cornerstone of your application. RISD, for instance, requires a portfolio of 12-20 pieces of your best and most recent work, showing a range of ideas, mediums, and subject matter. On the other hand, CalArts wants to see 20 pieces that together tell a story about your artistic interests, skills, and potential. Make sure that each portfolio piece is high-quality - that means good lighting and angles for photographs of physical pieces.

2. Unique Perspective: While a wide range of techniques and mediums is important, some cohesive thread or theme in your portfolio can help portray your unique perspective as an artist. It doesn't have to be a specific subject or style; it could be how you use colors, or a particular emotion your work tends to evoke.

3. Art-related Extracurriculars: Participating in art-related activities shows a strong commitment to your field. This could be anything from art clubs or classes, to internships at local galleries, to community service that involves art.

4. Academic Record: While the portfolio is key, a solid academic record can strengthen your application. It demonstrates your work ethic and commitment to learning. Both CalArts and RISD also require submission of your transcripts. The SAT/ACT is optional for CalArts but required by RISD.

5. Recommendation Letters: RISD asks for letters of recommendation. Ideally, you should aim for a letter from an art teacher who knows your abilities well, and can attest to your skill, creativity, passion, and commitment to art.

6. Essays: For RISD, you will also need to complete two essay questions. The essays are your chance to articulate your passion for art and your artistic goals. They allow the admission officers to understand you beyond your art and grades.

Remember, while the tips above are applicable to both RISD and CalArts, you should always check the specific requirements and criteria for each art school you apply to, as they may have slightly different expectations. Good luck as you embark on your journey to art school!
