What GPA is typically expected for admission into Stanford?

This might sound like a long shot, but Stanford is my dream school. I'm trying to gain a clearer picture of what they're looking for - anyone got a clue what GPA I should be aiming for to stand a decent chance at getting in?

Stanford University is one of the most selective schools in the U.S., and, as such, admission into Stanford is extremely competitive. Most admitted students have very high GPAs. While there is no official minimum GPA, students within the top 10% of their high school class with an unweighted GPA close to, if not a perfect 4.0, are often the most competitive.

For context, the middle 50% GPA range for Stanford's admitted students is typically around 3.93-4.00, on an unweighted 4.0 scale. References to the "middle 50%" mean that 25% of admitted students have a GPA below that range, and 25% have a GPA above that range, while the bulk of accepted students fall within that range.

However, keep in mind that just meeting these ranges does not guarantee admission, since Stanford reviews applications holistically. They likely won't make a decision based entirely on GPA – they'll also take into account factors like course rigor, standardized test scores (Stanford requires the SAT or ACT for the 2024-2025 application cycle), essay quality, recommendation letters, and extracurricular involvement.

It's important to know that admissions committees prefer up-trending grades and to see you challenge yourself with hard classes. Stanford values students with a rigorous course load over ones settling for easier A's. So even if your GPA isn’t quite in the aforementioned range, don't disqualify yourself from considering it. Stellar standardized test scores, unique extracurricular experiences, or truly compelling essays, can still land you a place there.

Remember, perfection in any single area is not required or realistic. Rather, an overall strong performance in multiple facets of your application is key.

Good luck with your applications, and keep your dreams high!
