How different is community college from a four-year university?

Hey y’all, I’ve been considering starting at a community college and then transferring to a four-year school to save some money, but how different is the experience? Like what should I expect in terms of classes, campus life, and making friends?

Hi there! It's smart to be considering all your options. My child started at a community college before transferring to a four-year university, and there were definitely some differences. Classes at community colleges can be smaller, which is great for one-on-one time with professors. Campus life, however, is less 'traditional'—fewer campus events and such, since many students are commuting, working, or handling family responsibilities.

In terms of making friends, you'll find plenty of like-minded individuals at community college, but since people have diverse schedules and priorities, it may take a bit more effort to form friendships. There might not be the same range of clubs or activities you'd find at a four-year university. But on the plus side, you'll meet a wider array of students from different walks of life, which can be a rich experience by itself.

When it comes time to transfer, you'll already have some solid college experience under your belt, which can really help with the transition. My child found it helpful to get involved on the new campus right away to meet people and feel part of the community. Overall, expect a more low-key experience at community college with a focus on academics and affordability, but with the right approach, it can be just as fulfilling!
