Hi everyone, NC State is one of my top choice schools, but I'm a bit confused about the GPA requirements. I've heard different things from different sources. Does anyone know what average GPA they're looking for? And do they put more emphasis on weighted or unweighted GPAs?
While NC State doesn’t specifically disclose a GPA requirement, the most recent first-year class had an average GPA of about 4.39 on a weighted scale, with a middle 50% range of 4.24 to 4.59. For comparison, an unweighted 4.0 GPA is considered all As, so these applicants have typically taken multiple challenging courses like honors or Advanced Placement (AP) classes.
Many colleges like NC State consider both unweighted and weighted GPAs. Unweighted GPA shows a school how you performed on a standard 4.0 scale, regardless of difficulty, and helps admissions officers compare applicants on equal footing. On the other hand, weighted GPA considers the difficulty of your classes and shows that you challenged yourself academically.
That said, GPA is just one part of the admissions process at NC State. Along with your academic performance, they consider extracurricular involvement, leadership, letter of recommendation, involvement in your community, and your essay. Similar to other universities, they take a holistic approach when evaluating applications, so it's not just about one number or statistic.
