AP Music Theory Exam, What's the Scoop?

Yo fellow music nerds, anyone here take the AP Music Theory Exam? How intense is it and what should I prioritize while studying? I'd appreciate any tips or resources you guys used!

Hey there! The AP Music Theory exam is certainly a unique one. If you're someone who loves music and has a strong understanding of it, then you should feel right at home. Just know that it requires a strong foundation in musical terminology, chord structures, and modes, among several other aspects.

The AP Music theory exam is divided into two sections: a multiple-choice section and a free response section that includes melodies and harmonic dictation. Multiple-choice questions will touch on topics like clefs, scales, intervals, chords and part-writing. While the free response section will typically feature exercises such as creating a melody that follows certain rules, identifying errors in voice leading, and harmonizing a melody.

Some key areas to focus on would be harmonic vocab (keep those triads and sevenths in your brain), voice leading rules, and be sure you're comfortable with part writing–especially four-part chorale style.

For studying, find example questions for these topics, or even see if there are old AP Music Theory exams online to practice on. More practice would not just give you a better understanding but also boost your confidence. Remember, practice consistently, don’t cram. Try approaching this like practicing an instrument. Good luck on your studies! Enjoy the music.
