What GPA should I aim for to be competitive at BYU?

Hey folks, I'm currently a junior and starting to look more seriously at my college list. I know BYU is pretty selective, but how high of a GPA should I have to be a solid applicant? I'm doing well in my classes, but I want to make sure I'm on track. Also, do they value weighted or unweighted GPA more?

Hello there! It's great that you're taking the initiative to plan ahead for your college applications. For BYU, while there is no officially stated 'minimum' GPA, you should aim as high as possible, which probably goes without saying. More specifically, to be competitive, a GPA of 3.8 or higher can be a good benchmark. If you're a little below that but have taken exceptionally difficult classes, or have an upward trend in your grades, your academic profile will likely still impress BYU admissions officers.

Regarding weighted vs. unweighted GPA, ideally you'll both take hard classes and succeed in them. Admissions officers use your GPA to evaluate your readiness for the higher academic level of college coursework, and neither coasting by in easy classes nor floundering in difficult ones will do that. So, while you want to challenge yourself with Honors, AP, or IB classes, you also want to make sure you're not overextending yourself.

To summarize, continue to work hard, and don't hesitate to reach out to your guidance counselor for personalized advice tailored to your personal academic record! Good luck!
