What do colleges like to see in extracurriculars?

Hey peeps, just wondering what kinds of extracurriculars colleges like to see on applications. I've got a mix of sports, community service, and a few clubs. Do they want to see leadership? Is it better to stick to a few activities and go deep, or try a bunch of different things? Thoughts?

Colleges definitely appreciate seeing leadership roles in extracurriculars because they can be indicators of your skills in teamwork, initiative, and responsibility. It's commonly recommended to focus on a few activities where you can make a significant impact, rather than participating in many with less involvement. Consistency and progression into roles of greater responsibility or achievement within these activities can be especially compelling. For example, if you start as a member of a club and work your way up to a leadership position, or if you consistently improve your performance and move into captaincy in a sport, those are clear signs of commitment and growth. Moreover, the depth of your engagement often allows you to write more reflectively about your experiences in application essays or interviews. Keep in mind that depth does not necessarily equate to a large time commitment, but rather to the meaningful impact and personal growth you can demonstrate through your involvement.
