University of California Merced Admissions?

Hi all, I've started considering University of California Merced and I'm bit lost on how to start my application process. Anyone got any tips, or can guide a fellow high schooler? Thanks in advance!

Firstly, congrats on making the decision to apply to UC Merced! Your journey begins with clarifying a few timelines and requirements. Since the University of California system uses the same application for all campuses, you'll need to prepare well ahead of time. Here's a simple guide to help you navigate through the application process.

1. Choosing your Major: Do some research on the majors offered by UC Merced and identify the major that correlates with your career goals or interest. Make sure you check the prerequisites for the major and align your coursework to meet those.

2. Application Filing Period: The filing period for the UC application typically opens on October 1 and closes on November 30. You can start creating your UC application account as early as August, but submission starts only in October.

3. Academic Records: You'll need to provide your academic records from grades 9 to 11 and planned coursework for 12th grade. For UC Merced, you need to complete 15 a-g subject courses with a grade of C or better. This includes courses in History, English, Math, Lab Science, Language other than English, College-Preparatory Electives, and Visual and Performing Arts.

4. Extracurricular Activities: Mention any significant extracurricular activities, work experience, or volunteering efforts. Remember, UC Merced, like all UC schools, consider the quality and level of involvement in your activities, not just the quantity.

5. Personal Insight Questions: You'll need to answer 4 out of 8 Personal Insight Questions, with no one question carrying more weight than another. This is an excellent opportunity for you to highlight unique aspects of your personality and experiences. Avoid cliche topics – instead, delve into special experiences that have defined your persona.

6. Test Scores: As of the 2024-2025 application cycle, UC Merced is test-blind, which means these schools do not consider SAT or ACT scores at all. So you won’t need to worry about test prep unless you plan to apply to schools that still require these scores.

Once your application is submitted during the filing period, it's all about waiting for the decision. UC Merced usually starts releasing its admission decisions in March. Best of luck with your applications!
