UofSC Requirements?

The University of South Carolina (UofSC) has a holistic admissions process, which means that they consider more than just grades and test scores. That being said, meeting certain academic standards can definitely improve your chances.

According to the most recently published data, the middle 50% GPA range for admitted students is 3.615-4.0 (on a 4.0 scale), and the middle 50% for SAT scores is 1180-1380. The middle 50% ACT range is 27-32. Keep in mind that these are the middle 50% ranges, meaning that 25% of accepted students scored below these ranges and 25% scored above.

As for specific course requirements, UofSC strongly recommends that high school students complete a minimum of 20 academic units in various subject areas, including:

- 4 Units of English

- 4 Units of Math (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and an upper-level math for which Algebra II is a prerequisite)

- 3 Units of Laboratory Science

- 2 Units of the same Foreign Language

- 1 Unit of Fine Arts

- 1 Unit of Physical Education or ROTC

- 5 Units of any other academic electives

Additionally, UofSC uses a unique index called the South Carolina Residency-Based Admissions (SC SRI), which factors in GPA and test scores only for South Carolina residents. Factors such as recommendations, activities or personal essays are not considered for residents of South Carolina.

When it comes to holistic review, they are looking for students who have challenged themselves in high school in order to best prepare for college, so advanced courses such as AP or IB classes can be beneficial. They also look at your character and personal qualities, what you do outside the classroom (extracurricular activities), and your potential for success at UofSC.
