PSAT Score for National Merit Qualification

Is there a specific PSAT score that qualifies for National Merit Scholarship consideration? What's the ballpark figure I should be aiming for if I want to be in the running?

Yes, there is a selection index score you need to meet or exceed to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program. The selection index score is calculated by doubling your Reading and Writing score, adding it to the Math score, then dividing the sum by 10. The selection index ranges from 48 to 228.

The qualifying score for National Merit consideration varies by state, as each state has its own cutoff based on the top 1% of test-takers in that state. These cutoffs are not officially announced in advance and vary from year to year. However, in recent years, the cutoff scores have typically ranged from 208 to 223, depending on the state.

Remember, becoming a National Merit Semifinalist or Finalist is based not only on your PSAT score, but also on your academic record and other factors, like your application and SAT scores should you progress in the competition. So, while aiming for a higher PSAT score can improve your chances, it's also important to focus on maintaining strong academic performance overall.

Keep in mind that the PSAT is administered once a year around October/November. Most students take it in their junior year, which is the year that counts for National Merit. Some take it in their sophomore year as well for practice. Hope this helps and best of luck in your preparations!
