Michigan ACT Scores: How High Should Mine Be?

I'm working on my application for the University of Michigan and I'm a bit worried about my ACT score. Could anyone share a range that the university generally accepts? Is there a minimum score they look for?

University of Michigan (UM) does not publicly state a minimum ACT score requirement. However, to give you an idea of the typical range, the middle 50% of admitted students usually score between 31 and 34 on the ACT. This means that 25% of admitted students score below 31, while another 25% score above 34 with some even achieving a perfect 36. Keep in mind that these are statistics for previously admitted cohorts, so it's not a guarantee.

It is important to remember though that UM, like many universities, practices a holistic admissions process, so your ACT score is just one piece of the puzzle. Other factors like GPA, rigor of coursework (AP/IB/dual enrollment), extracurricular activities, essays, and letters of recommendation will all be weighed alongside your ACT scores.

If your score falls below the middle 50% range, do not be disheartened. There are definitely students who get accepted with lower ACT scores. Focus on the strengths of your application, and highlight those in your essays and extracurricular section.

It's also worth noting that as of the 2024-2025 cycle, UM is still test optional so you won't have to submit if you don't feel confident about your scores. Be sure to double-check their admissions website for the most current information.
