Understanding UC Schools Application Process

Hey everyone! I’m just wondering, is there anything major I need to know about the UC application process? Are there certain unique aspects that don't apply to the Common App or Coalition App? Should I focus on something specific while applying? Any advice is welcome, thanks in advance!

One major difference between the UC application system and the Common App or Coalition App systems is that UCs use one application for all nine campuses. This means you don't need to submit individual applications to each UC campus you're interested in. Instead, when you're filling out your UC application, you choose which campuses to send it to.

Another key feature of the UC application is that it makes use of Personal Insight Questions (PIQs) rather than a traditional personal statement. You get to choose four out of eight potential questions to answer, with a 350-word limit for each. These questions ask about everything from leadership experience to educational goals to how you've overcome challenges. This allows the University of California system to get a clearer picture of who you are and what you bring to the table.

A third distinguishing aspect of the UC application process is that these schools do not require or consider letters of recommendation for the vast majority of applicants. There are some cases where a student could be asked for a letter of recommendation as part of a supplemental review, but this is not the norm.

Lastly, remember that the UCs do not consider SAT or ACT scores; they are test-blind. So, you don't need to worry about sending test scores as part of your application.

In terms of strategy, on your application, you should try to portray a detailed and engaging view of yourself and your life experiences in your PIQ responses. Provide a rounded picture of your personal qualities, experiences, and accomplishments, and highlight your growth as a student and an individual. You can use these questions to emphasize different aspects of your experience and personality, thereby giving admissions officers a comprehensive view of you as a potential student.

Hope this helps, and best of luck with your application process!
