Applying for Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS)

What's up, everyone? I've been thinking about applying for the Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) program. Does anyone here have experience with that? Is the application process extensive? What can I do to increase my chances? Any help would be appreciated!

Hello! It's great to see you showing interest in Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS). This is a competitive pre-college summer program, so there are a few things to keep in mind as you're preparing your application.

First, the application does have several components, but don't let that intimidate you. You'll need to fill out an online application which includes areas for you to list extracurricular activities and tell them about your interests and goals. If you have leadership experience or deep involvement in an activity that aligns with the program you're interested in at YYGS, be sure to highlight that.

The program also requires two essays: One asks about something that you've done which had a meaningful impact on your local, regional, national, or international community, and the second provides two prompts from which you can choose. These essays are a great way for the admissions committee to learn more about you beyond your academics, so make sure they highlight your unique experiences and perspectives. Avoid generic responses—personalization is key here.

There are two recommendations needed—one from a teacher and one from an individual who can speak to your qualifications for the program (this can be another teacher, a counselor, a mentor, etc.).

It's a little hard to give specific advice on boosting your chances because the admissions officers are looking for a diverse group of participants with different backgrounds and interests, but in general, the program prefers students who are not only academically excellent, but also those who show the potential to become leaders and change-makers. Anything you can showcase, whether through your essays or recommendations, that exhibits your curiosity, creativity, and commitment, will certainly strengthen your application.

Remember the process is selective and competitive. It's essential to showcase your unique standpoint, including your potential for leadership and dedication to personal interests. Persistence, creativity, commitment, and the ability to express your passions and ideas clearly will be advantageous.

And finally, ensure that everything is submitted before the deadline. Hope this information is helpful and good luck with your application!
