When is the best time to start studying for the SAT?

Hey everyone! I'm a junior, and I've been hearing a lot about the SAT lately. I know it's a big deal for college applications, so I want to do well - the thought is making me a smidge stressed. In your experience, when is a good time to start prepping and how many months in advance do I need to study? Thanks!

The best time to start preparing for the SAT can depend on a variety of factors, but for many students, starting the summer before junior year is a solid option. This provides you with ample time to familiarize yourself with the test structure, practice questions, and learn strategies. The digital SAT comprises of two 32-minute modules each for Reading and Writing, and two 35-minute modules for Math, so becoming comfortable with the pace and skills needed for these sections will be important.

Ideally, you should dedicate about three to six months for effective SAT preparation. This, of course, varies as some students might need a longer study period to reach their target score. This semester can be split into a few weeks for an initial diagnostic test to determine where you're starting from, followed by a study period focusing on areas where you need to improve, and finally, a string of practice tests to get yourself accustomed to the test conditions and pacing.

But remember, quality over quantity is the key here. Instead of counting the hours, focus on maximizing the productivity of your study time. Also, remember to schedule breaks and avoid cramming the week before the test. Regular, consistent studying will help you retain information longer.

Lastly, The Bluebook™ app is a useful tool as it allows you to preview the digital SAT and take a full-length practice test, which is worth looking into.

Good luck with your SAT preparation! Consistency, focus, and staying calm can largely contribute to achieving your desired score.
