How Long Does the SAT Exam Last?

Hey guys! I've registered for the SAT and I'm wondering, how long does the exam take from start to finish, breaks included? Just want to be prepared for the day of the test. Any tips on how to stay focused during the whole exam duration?

From 2024 onwards, the SAT format was changed and is now fully digital. The duration of the test is 134 minutes, and this is split between two main subjects.

For the Reading and Writing sections, you'll have two 32-minute modules, totalling 64 minutes. During this time you'll complete 54 questions which averages out to around 71 seconds per question.

On the Math side, you again have two 32-minute modules, adding up to 70 minutes. Here you'll deal with 44 questions, giving you a bit more time per question - 96 seconds (or a little over a minute and a half) for each math problem.

As for breaks, there is typically a 10-minute break after the first math section and a 5-minute break after the second math section. So, the total duration of the test with breaks included can be approximately 150 minutes or 2.5 hours.

To keep concentration during the test, follow these suggestions:

1. Make sure you're well rested: Lack of sleep can seriously hamper your focus. Try to get a good night's sleep before the test day.

2. Eat a healthy breakfast: Having a meal rich in proteins and complex carbs will ensure you have a steady release of energy throughout the test.

3. Practice mindfulness exercises: Techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises or even simple stretching before the exam can help ground you and aid concentration.

4. Use the break wisely: Stand up, stretch, have a snack, use the restroom, just make sure you take a mental break. This will help you to be refreshed for the next section.

Breaking the SAT examination into chunks and taking it one question at a time can also help you stay focused throughout the test duration. Remember that practice can play a key role in how comfortable and focused you are on the test day. Good luck!
