Cracking Harvard: What are the Requirements?

Hey there, I'm aiming high and am completely determined to apply to Harvard. I know it’s a long shot, but I want to give myself the best chance possible. Can anyone share what the requirements are or what they’re looking for? GPA? ECs? How much do they weigh essays vs. other components?

Your ambition is commendable! Applying to Harvard is indeed a big step. There is no set 'minimum requirement' to get into Harvard and they employ a holistic admission process, taking into account various aspects of your application. However, there are certain trends we can look at to understand their expectations better.

For starters, your academics should be quite strong. Typically, a vast majority of recently admitted Harvard students have a GPA of 4.0 unweighted, which suggests top performance in the most rigorous classes available at their high schools. If your class rank information is available, being in the top 5-10% would be recommended.

Concerning standardized tests, Harvard requires them again starting from the 2024-2025 application cycle. Keep in mind that higher test scores can offset lower grades, and vice versa, when colleges calculate your Academic Index. Harvard's middle 50% SAT range is around 1460-1580, and the ACT range is around 33-35.

Extracurriculars can really add value to your profile by demonstrating your leadership, passion, or commitment. Harvard is attracted to students who have a 'spike,' or a highly developed specialty, as this indicates possible future success in that area. Top-tier extracurricular activities are considered quite impressive by admissions committees.

Harvard estimates that the personal essay, recommendations, extracurriculars, and personal qualities are "very important" in their admission decision. Although it isn't exactly specified how much weight essays have vs other components, a compelling personal essay and glowing recommendations can definitely tip the scale in your favour. It's a chance for the admissions committee to know who you are beyond your grades and test scores.

While these factors are crucial, it is equally important to demonstrate a genuine interest in Harvard and its unique resources and opportunities in your application. You can showcase this in your supplement essay where you'll explain why you wish to attend Harvard. This should be specific and show that you took the time to research the college and understand how it fits your academic and personal goals.

Keep in mind that, despite all of the above, there are no guarantees when it comes to Ivy League admission as they are highly competitive and consider a multitude of factors. Good luck!
