Debate on Taking the ACT

I'm a junior and I've been debating whether or not to take the ACT on top of the SAT. Is it actually beneficial to take both exams? What are some factors I should consider before going down this road? Any advice would be helpful!

In the ever-changing landscape of college admissions, it can often be difficult to make firm decisions regarding standardized testing. One factor to consider is if the colleges you're interested in require a specific test or are test-optional. Some students choose to take both tests because the ACT and the SAT have different formats, and you might discover that you perform significantly better on one over the other. The ACT, for example, includes a science section and doesn't give as much time per question, so if you have strong science skills and can work quickly, the ACT may be a better fit.

On the other hand, the SAT caters more towards critical thinking skills and provides more time per question. Starting in 2024, the SAT has been converted to a digital format, and this may affect your preference as well. It's also worth considering that preparing for two different exams is a significant time commitment. It could be more beneficial to focus on preparing extensively for one exam to potentially achieve a higher score.

Also, analyze your current SAT scores and how they compare to the average scores of accepted students at your choice colleges. If your SAT score is competitive, it might not be necessary to take the ACT. But if it's on the lower end, it's worth considering.

Do a few practice tests for both the SAT and ACT to see which one feels more comfortable. Some people naturally do better on one test over the other, so it's worth investigating which one you prefer.
