FAFSA for University of North Texas - any tips?

Greetings everyone! I am planning to apply for financial aid at UNT. Any tips or guidance on submitting the FAFSA for University of North Texas?

Sure! Submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is an important part of the financial aid application process, including for the University of North Texas (UNT).

First and foremost, make sure you start the process as soon as possible. The FAFSA becomes available on October 1 each year. While the deadline for UNT isn't usually until later, it's best to apply early as some aid is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

When filling out the FAFSA, you'll need to gather several pieces of information, like your Social Security Number or Alien Registration Number, federal income tax returns (yours and your parents' if you’re a dependent student), records of your current bank balances, and records of investments and untaxed income.

Remember, since 2024, the FAFSA uses an index called the Student Aid Index (SAI) instead of the Expected Family Contribution. The main difference is that the SAI can be a negative number, up to -$1,500, which allows for greater aid need to be seen.

Additionally, list UNT among the schools to which you want the FAFSA data sent. You'll need UNT's Federal School Code, which is 003594.

Lastly, be sure you (and your parent if you’re a dependent student) set up a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID) before beginning the FAFSA. This will make the process smoother when you complete the form as it serves as your legal signature.

After you've completed the FAFSA, wait for UNT's financial aid office to send you an aid offer. Review your offer carefully—a Financial Aid Counselor can help explain anything that isn't clear if necessary.

Filling out the FAFSA can be a little tricky, but with preparation and prompt action, you'll navigate it successfully. Good luck!
