What qualities does Cornell look for in their applicants?

Hey guys, I've been aiming to apply to Cornell for quite some time now. Just wondering if there's any insider info to what they specifically look for in prospective students? Do they prioritize extracurriculars, leadership roles, or certain types of coursework? Any information would be very useful, thanks!

Cornell University, like many elite schools, emphasizes a strong desire for students who have shown exceptional involvement and leadership in their activities, and who have pursued rigorous academic coursework. Remember, it's not about just participating in activities, but also showing depth in your involvement and the impact you've made.

Cornell values students who have a distinctive "spike" or a highly-developed specialty, that is, something they've shown to excel in. This could be anything from being a top mathematics student to a nationally ranked tennis player, or the founder of a community organization. It's less about being a "jack of all trades" and more about showing deep commitment and success in your chosen endeavors.

As for coursework, they want to see that you've challenged yourself throughout high school. Take the most rigorous classes your school offers and strive to excel in them. Courses in your intended major field of study are especially important. If you're interested in a STEM program, for example, taking advanced physics, calculus, or computer science and performing well demonstrates your readiness for study in those areas at Cornell.

Keep in mind that Cornell is still test-optional for the 2024-2025 application cycle, so you don't have to submit test scores to be considered. Nevertheless, a strong SAT or ACT score can still be an asset to your application.

Lastly, your essays should communicate your passions, potentials, and how you'd contribute to Cornell's campus. Make sure to research your chosen school or program inside Cornell, as expressing fit and interest in that specific program is important. Show them that you understand why Cornell is the right place for you and how you can contribute to their community.

Remember, while this provides general guidance, every applicant is unique and there is no one "type" of student that is guaranteed admission. It's all about showcasing your particular strengths and how you can contribute to Cornell's community.
