No worries, you're not alone in finding the DBQ (Document-Based Question) section challenging. Here are some tips on how to approach it:

1. Understand the question: Start by taking a moment to fully understand what the prompt is asking. What time period, geographic area, and theme is it focused on? Is the question asking for causes, effects, or something else?

2. Crucial thesis statement: Crafting a clear, analytic thesis is central to a successful DBQ essay. This statement should respond directly to the prompt and provide a roadmap for your essay. It should also ideally include some form of argument or perspective that you'll substantiate through the use of the documents.

3. Analyze the documents: Take your time in properly reading the documents and understand the perspective each document provides. Keep an eye out for the author's point of view, the purpose of the document, and the historical context in which it was created.

4. Group the documents: Documents are not isolated pieces of evidence but interconnected snapshots of a larger historical period. Try to identify 2-3 groups that the documents can be categorized into based on their content, perspective, or source.

5. Use all the documents: You don’t have to agree with the argument presented in the documents, but all seven should be used in your essay. However, be aware that using a document is not simply about referencing or paraphrasing but analyzing its content and perspective.

6. Provide outside evidence: While the documents are your main evidence in the DBQ essay, it's also important to bring in some outside knowledge on the topic. This reinforces your arguments and shows that you have a well-rounded understanding of the historical period in question.

7. HIP each document: Historical context, Intended audience, and Purpose (HIP) - this is the analysis technique for each document. Who wrote it? Why? In what context? Answering these questions will elevate your argument, showcasing your understanding of historical realities.

8. Manage your time effectively: Practice previous DBQ questions under timed conditions to ensure you are able to effectively analyze all the documents within the given time.

9. Check your work: If you finish your essay early, take a moment to read through your work. Check if you have correctly understood and utilized the documents, have a clear thesis, and a strong concluding paragraph.

10. Take care of yourself: Finally remember to stay hydrated, take breaks, and get plenty of sleep to keep your mind sharp during the test.

I hope these tips help. Good luck, and remember, practice makes perfect!
