Average ACT Writing Score?

Hey!! I'm just starting to prepare for the ACT (a bit stressed tbh). Looking for some guidance on what the average writing score is? Thanks!

Hello, it's understandable you'd be curious about this as you begin your test preparations - knowing what scores to aim for can inform your study plan. For the ACT writing test, the scores range from 2 to 12. Each of the four domains - Ideas and Analysis, Development and Support, Organization, and Language Use and Conventions - will be evaluated by two graders on a 1-6 scale. Their combined scores make up your total essay score.

A score of 7-8 is considered average. That said, scoring a 10 or above is pretty rare, with very few students achieving this. So, aim to get at least an 8 on your writing, but achieving a 9 or 10 would be exceptional. Remember, practice is essential! Especially with the writing section, as getting familiar with the structure of the essay will be extremely beneficial. Keep refining your writing with practice essays and look into getting your practice essays evaluated if you can. Best of luck on your ACT journey!
