Hey everyone, I've always dreamt of studying at Duke and was wondering what SAT score is usually expected or preferred for a prospective student there. Is it really important to aim for the 75th percentile, or are there people who get in with lower scores? Thanks in advance!
Duke University is one of the universities with a higher-range SAT expectation. Based on the latest published information, the middle 50% of accepted students scored between 1490 and 1570 on the SAT. In other words, a score of 1490 would be in the 25th percentile, and a score of 1570 would be in the 75th percentile.
Aiming for at least the 75th percentile of Duke's SAT range, which is 1570, would make your application competitive from a standardized test standpoint. A high SAT score doesn't guarantee admission, but it can certainly enhance the strength of your application. On the other hand, students do get admitted with lower scores, too, because admissions are not solely determined by the SAT score. Other aspects of your application, like your grades, course rigor, extracurricular activities, essays, and recommendation letters are also taken into account and can offset a lower than average SAT score.
However, keep in mind that starting from the 2024-2025 application cycle, the SAT has switched to a fully digital format. The structure, score range, and difficulty of the test are supposed to remain the same as the previously paper-based one, but you should still prepare for the test using digital materials. It'd be wise to familiarize yourself with the new format to ensure you're as comfortable as possible on test day.
Do note that Duke University as of the 2024-2025 application cycle is still test-optional, so submitting an SAT score is not a required part of the application process.
