Hey friends! I'm planning on taking the SAT soon, and I was wondering if someone could break down the different sections for me? What type of questions should I expect? Thanks in advance!
Hello there!
The SAT is an important college entrance exam and consists of two main sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW), and Math. Do note that starting from spring 2024, the SAT has become fully digital. Here is a bit more about each section:
1. Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW): This is further divided into:
a. Reading Test: You'll be given passages from literature, historical documents, social sciences, and natural sciences to read and then answer questions on. These questions test your comprehension and interpretation skills.
b. Writing and Language Test: This segment presents you with passages that contain errors or weaknesses. You'll be tasked with improving the passages based on grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and style.
2. Math: The math portion covers algebra I and II, geometry, and some trigonometry. Problems may present in multiple-choice format or student-produced response questions, known as grid-ins, where students generate and fill in their answers.
Now let's turn to the structure and timing:
EBRW section: It consists of two 32-minute modules, with 54 questions to be completed in total. This allows roughly 71 seconds to answer each question.
Math section: It includes two 35-minute modules, with 44 questions to be answered in total, giving you about 96 seconds per question (over a minute and a half).
Given the new digital format of the SAT, it's worth noting that you can use a calculator for both math modules. The total duration of the test is 134 minutes, and there are 98 questions in total.
I highly recommend trying out some practice tests before your actual test to become familiar with the question types and time management. The test directions and structure can also be practiced using the Bluebook™ app.
Good luck with your SAT prep!
