SAT Score Breakdown

Hey there, I'm getting ready for the SATs and I was wondering how much each question on the SAT is worth? Does it vary per section? Are there penalties for incorrect answers? Thanks in advance!

Hey! That's a good question. The SAT is now fully digital as of spring 2024. But, don't worry, the scoring method hasn't changed too drastically. Each question on the test is worth the same amount, regardless of how hard it is or where it appears on the test. There are 98 questions total, and your raw score is simply the number of questions you answered correctly.

You'll be glad to know that there's no penalty for wrong answers, so you won't lose points for making guesses. It can actually be a good strategy to answer every question, even if you aren't sure of the answer, since leaving a question blank is effectively the same as getting it wrong.

Your raw score is then scaled to fit the SAT's 200-800 point scale per section (Reading/Writing and Math), for a total possible score of 1600.

Remember, it's not just about getting a bunch of questions right, but also managing your time effectively to attempt as many questions as possible.

Good luck with your SAT preparation! I hope this information helps.
