What can a 31 ACT score get me?

I just got my ACT score back, and honestly, I was hoping for a 33 or something...but I got a 31. No complaints as it's still a good score! But I'm curious, is it good enough for those Ivy League applications? Please advise!

A 31 on the ACT is above average and can make you competitive at many universities, but it falls a bit short for most Ivy League schools. The middle 50% ACT range for Ivy League schools is often 32-35. This means that 25% of admitted students scored below a 32, but it's important to note that those students typically have other exceptional attributes to their application.

That said, admissions to top-tier schools like the Ivies isn't solely about test scores, and a 31 won't automatically disqualify you. Other aspects of your application like your GPA, coursework, extracurriculars, essays, and letters of recommendation carry weight as well. They're looking to add diverse skills and experiences to their campus - essentially, they're building a community, not just admitting test scores.

Moreover, you could consider retaking the ACT if you feel you can improve your score and won't be overly stressed. However, it's not always necessary or advantageous to retake the test if it takes time away from your other activities or commitments. A more holistic approach to your application can pay off as well.

While a score of 31 might not be as competitive for Ivy League universities, it is still a strong score for many top-tier institutions not in the Ivy League, like University of Michigan, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, or University of Wisconsin, Madison, whose middle 50% ACT scores are in that range.

In the end, focus on presenting a well-rounded application that showcases your achievements and passion. Remember, a 31 ACT score doesn't define your capabilities or your worth!
