What should I focus on to make my application appealing for NYU admissions?

NYU is my absolute dream school. It's basically all I've been thinking about. I want to make sure my application stands out. Has anyone who's been admitted to NYU noticed any particular aspect of their application that they believe clinched their placement?

In order to make your application stand out to NYU, it is important to have a clearly demonstrated and highly developed specialty or "spike" in your chosen field of study. This shows definite strength in your area of interest and can make you an appealing candidate.

Try to curate your extracurricular experiences to align with your chosen major or interests. Being involved in 8-10 total extracurriculars is typical of successful applicants, with a deep involvement in a few being more preferable to having many with lesser involvement. Prioritize those activities that show leadership or awards at the state, national, or international level (Tier 1 or 2 activities as per the 4 tiers of extracurriculars).

Moreover, if you're looking to stand out in your application, the essay cannot be overlooked. The essay should showcase a unique perspective or a personal story, and avoid cliche topics (e.g., sports injuries or victories, moving schools). While it's okay to write about common topics, they have to take a unique angle, such as how engaging in a typical activity led to an unusual outcome or growth experience. It's best to focus on a specific experience or time in your life rather than trying to summarize your entire high school career.

Indeed, your essay should ideally connect to why you’re interested in NYU. This goes beyond a simple liking for their programs or campus. Try to delve into specific courses, faculty, opportunities, or philosophical approaches that appeal to you. Giving specifics will show the admissions team that you're serious and have done your research.

Lastly, taking a rigorous course-load and maintaining a solid GPA is crucial. This includes lots of honors, AP, or IB classes, depending on what your school offers. However, keep in mind that just meeting the baseline academic requirements likely won't make your application stand out, but instead will help you to be considered in the first place. For NYU, your academics should be in the range or higher than their typical admitted student profile.

These are some strategies to help you craft a more appealing application for NYU. Remember, admissions committees are looking for passionate, committed students who will make a positive contribution to their student body. Show them why you fit that profile.
