AP Physics 1 or AP Physics C: What's the big difference?

Hey guys! I'm a junior looking at my class schedule for my senior year. I'm contemplating between AP Physics 1 and AP Physics C. What are the major differences between the two courses? Is one harder than the other? Which one would be better if I'm planning to major in Engineering in college? Would love to get some insights from you all.

The major difference between AP Physics 1 and AP Physics C lies within the depth and breadth of content, as well as the prerequisites for each course.

AP Physics 1 is algebra-based physics, and covers a broader range of topics, such as mechanics, waves and sound, and electricity and circuits. It builds off your knowledge from regular high school physics and is designed to be the first physics class that most students will take.

On the other hand, AP Physics C is calculus-based and is split into two parts - Mechanics and Electricity & Magnetism, each forming a separate AP course. Students often find these courses to be more challenging than Physics 1, mainly due to the calculus requirement and the in-depth exploration of mechanics and electromagnetic concepts.

Regarding your aspiration to major in Engineering, AP Physics C may be more beneficial as this course is often akin to the physics classes you'll encounter in an engineering undergraduate program, given the calculus leanings which are important to engineering studies.

That said, the best choice depends on your comfort level with math, particularly calculus, and your interest in a deeper dive into the mechanics and electricity/magnetism topics. Remember to consider your full course load too because maintaining balance is key in your senior year!
