How much do AP exam scores impact college admissions?

Just curious, how heavily do colleges weigh our AP exam scores in the admissions process? Do they actually make or break an application?

AP exam scores are generally considered as secondary factors in the admissions process. They can complement your high school transcript by validating the grades you received in AP courses, but they are not usually a make-or-break element. Admissions officers primarily look for rigorous coursework and your grades in those courses. High AP scores can demonstrate a mastery of the subject matter and a readiness for college-level work, which can be beneficial especially if you're applying to highly selective institutions or programs within certain colleges where subject matter expertise is valued.

However, they are not typically as influential as your GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and personal essays. It's also worth noting that some students don't have access to AP classes or choose not to take the exams, and colleges are aware of this when reviewing applications. In summary, while strong AP scores can enhance your application, they are not the deciding factor in the admissions process.
