Need specifics on what IB courses are

Hey everyone, my school is offering some courses under the IB program next year. Thing is, I'm not entirely sure what defines an IB course. What are the areas of focus and academic level like in these courses?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is an internationally recognized curriculum that provides a rigorous and well-rounded education. It focuses on critical, holistic thinking and intercultural understanding. The IB program includes the "Diploma Program", generally for students aged 16 to 19 which takes two years, and encompasses six different academic areas including Language and Literature, Individuals and Societies, Mathematics, The Arts, Experimental Sciences, and a Second Language.

IB courses are offered at two levels of rigor: Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL). Higher Level courses have a higher level of difficulty and depth, while Standard Level courses are less consuming but still rigorous.

One unique feature of the IB program is the inclusion of a course known as the “Theory of Knowledge,” which encourages students to think critically about how they obtain and process knowledge. In addition, students must also complete an Extended Essay—a research project where students delve into a subject of their choice in great detail and a Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) requirement, which involves contributing to the school or local community.

Remember that IB courses tend to be academically challenging and involve a significant amount of independent study and research. They're a good choice if you're academically ambitious or if you're keen to study a diverse range of subjects. It's also noteworthy that many colleges recognize the rigor of the IB program and it can place you in a competitive position in college admissions.

Please also consider the demands of the IB curriculum on your time and schedule. It would be a good idea to discuss with your school counselor or teachers before deciding whether the IB program is the right fit for you.

One last point: you can either take individual IB courses or aim for the full IB diploma, which involves taking six IB subjects, completing CAS, Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay. Both paths have their benefits and drawbacks, so it's essential to consider what will work best for you and your future goals.
