What to expect as a college freshman compared to high school?

Nervous upcoming college freshman here! I've heard that being a college freshman is somewhat similar to being a high school freshman. Is that right? What are the biggest changes I should brace myself for? Really want to get ahead of the game and prepare myself for the transition.

Hello nervous freshman! As a parent of a current college student, I can honestly tell you it's absolutely normal to feel anxious about this big transition. While there are similarities to being a high school freshman, like the 'new kid on the block' feeling and learning new routines, college brings its unique set of changes. For one, you'll be managing your own time much more than you did in high school. There aren't parents or teachers to guide your schedule, so self-discipline is key.

You should also prepare for a different level of academic rigor. Professors expect a greater depth of thought and analysis, and there's often less frequent testing, meaning each assignment and exam carries more weight. But don't worry! There are resources like tutoring centers and study groups to help.

Another change is the living situation. If you're staying in dorms, you'll have to adjust to living with roommates and being responsible for your day-to-day life, like laundry and meals. My kid found the independence thrilling but also a bit daunting at first.

Lastly, get ready for a diverse social environment with students from various backgrounds. It's a great opportunity to make new friends and learn about different cultures. Remember that it's all a learning experience, and it's okay to take time to find your groove!
