Is Studying for the PSAT Worth It?

Hey guys, I've been surrounded by mixed opinions about this. I know that the PSAT is technically just practice for the SAT but should I spend considerable time studying for it? Would it be beneficial in terms of college prep or merit scholarships?

Studying for the PSAT can certainly be advantageous, and there are a couple of primary reasons for this.

Firstly, the PSAT, in its current digital format, has a very similar structure to the SAT: both tests now consist of two 32-minute modules for Reading and Writing to complete 54 questions, and two 35-minute modules for Math to finish 44 questions. This makes the PSAT a good rehearsal for the rigors of the SAT. By preparing for the PSAT, you are also indirectly preparing for the SAT.

Secondly, scoring well on the PSAT may qualify you for the National Merit Scholarship Program. This program offers recognition and scholarship opportunities for high-achieving students. A high PSAT score, generally in the top 1% of all test-takers, is needed to qualify for these accolades. Even if you don't qualify for the scholarship, being a Commended Scholar or Semifinalist can be a boost on your college applications.

But, remember that time is a scarce resource. If preparing for the PSAT conflicts with more important aspects of your application profile such as your grades, extracurricular involvements, or other test preparations like the SAT or ACT, you'll want to ensure those are your priority.

Finally, keep in mind that while the PSAT serves as a good diagnostic tool, focusing solely on PSAT prep and neglecting the SAT might not be the best strategy. The SAT carries a lot more weight in college admissions and studying for it will inevitably help with PSAT prep. However, a balanced approach, taking into account your time, resources, and goals, is advised.
