SUNY Schools in Long Island, NY

Long Island resident here! Planning my college journey and considering staying local. Can anyone share list of SUNY schools located in Long Island and perhaps experiences, if any have studied there? How's the student life and academic rigor?

Absolutely, happy to help! There are two main State University of New York (SUNY) institutions on Long Island: Stony Brook University and Farmingdale State College.

Stony Brook University is a public research university and has a strong emphasis on STEM, but it also offers a wide variety of programs in humanities and fine arts. With a diverse student body, Stony Brook is known for its research opportunities and academic rigor. It is a part of the Association of American Universities, a group of the top 63 research universities in North America, which can provide excellent opportunities for undergraduates looking to get involved in research. However, as with many large universities, class sizes can be large in the beginning, but become more intimate as you progress into your major.

Farmingdale State College is more oriented towards applied sciences. It offers degree programs in business, engineering technology, health sciences, and more. The school is recognized for its commitment to applied learning and technology, with a large percentage of students participating in internships and co-op programs before graduating. Class sizes at Farmingdale tend to be smaller than at larger universities, providing more opportunities for individualized instruction.

While both schools offer a myriad of student organizations and clubs, the size and social dynamics of each campus vary. Stony Brook, being a larger university, has more of a traditional college campus vibe with a wider variety of clubs and activities. Farmingdale, on the other hand, is more of a commuter school, though it has increased its housing capacity and still offers several student-run clubs and organizations for students looking to get involved.

If weather is a consideration, keep in mind that Long Island's climate can be quite chilly in winters! Overall, it would be beneficial to visit both campuses if possible, to get a feel for the environment and see where you feel most comfortable. Good luck with your decision-making process!
