Does Upenn heavily consider ACT scores?

So I'm not entirely confident in my ACT score, and the University of Pennsylvania is high on my list. Does anyone know how heavily they weigh ACT scores? Would a lower score be a deal-breaker, or is it still possible to get in with solid grades, extracurriculars etc? Hoping someone can shed a light on this.

The University of Pennsylvania, like many selective universities, considers the ACT scores as an important piece of your application. However, it's crucial to remember that they do not judge applications solely based on standardized test scores.

UPenn, as of the 2024-2025 application cycle, continues to utilize a test-optional policy. This means you have the choice not to submit ACT (or SAT) scores if you do not think they accurately demonstrate your academic abilities. It's noteworthy that while the test-optional policy has been in place, the mean SAT and ACT scores of accepted students remained fairly high.

That being said, UPenn takes a holistic approach to admissions and considers many factors beyond just test scores. This includes your academic performance (grades and rigor of your high school curriculum), extracurricular activities, essays, letters of recommendation, and other application materials. Therefore, if you feel your ACT score is lower than you would like, but you have strong grades and involvement in extracurricular that demonstrate your interests and leadership, you may still have a competitive application. Moreover, the essay sections of your application offer a significant opportunity to showcase your passions, interests, and individual qualities that a test score cannot summarize.

In the end, your ACT score is merely one part of your application. So, while a lower ACT score might not absolutely exclude you from being considered for admission, it's the overall strength and coherence of your application that truly matters. Whether or not you decide to submit your ACT score, you should emphasize your strengths throughout the rest of your application.
