Just how binding is an early decision application?

Hey everybody, I've got my heart set on one particular college and I'm planning to apply early decision. I totally get it's supposed to be binding, but can anyone clarify what that extends to? Like, would I have to go for sure if I get accepted or are there any exceptional circumstances? This process is kinda stressful and any advice would be appreciated.

The Early Decision (ED) agreement is indeed binding, which means that if you're accepted, you're expected to enroll at that school and withdraw any applications you've sent to other schools. This commitment is not to be taken lightly, as colleges take this agreement very seriously, and violating it can potentially have negative consequences, such as getting your acceptance rescinded.

However, it's important to know that there's an exception to this rule, and it revolves around financial aid. If you receive your financial aid package and find it lacking or unsatisfactory, it's one of the few cases where you can break the ED agreement. In this scenario, you should first try to negotiate with the school's financial aid office to see if a more favorable aid package can be worked out. If all else fails and you find the financial aid package still inadequate, then you can decline the acceptance.

Remember to make use of the school's net price calculator before applying ED — it's a good tool that gives you an estimation of the financial aid you'll likely receive, which can help inform your decision on whether or not to apply ED. However, note that results from net price calculators are only estimates and your actual financial aid award may vary.

In terms of 'exceptional circumstances', essentially, financial-related issues would be considered valid. Other scenarios would require some negotiation with the school, so it helps to maintain open and respectful communication with the admissions office. Do note that applying ED should not be used as a strategic move if you're unsure about attending, it's for students who have a clear first-choice school.
